I am working with National Service Dogs (NSD). They are a registered Canadian charitable organization based in Cambridge, Ontario, and they were established in 1996. Their Canadian charitable registration number is 898029228 RR0001.
NSD is the only Canadian-based organization that is accredited by Assistance Dogs International (ADI) to train and place service dogs with specialized training to work with individuals who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). ADI is one of the world’s leading international service dog/assistance dog standards organizations. ADI’s website is located at http://www.assistancedogsinternational.org.
NSD breeds and trains its own dogs (golden retrievers, labrador retrievers and mixed golden/labrador retrievers) in its facilities located in Cambridge, Ontario.
NSD’s PTSD-trained service dogs undergo annual re-certification testing, in accordance with ADI’s “Public Access Test” (PAT), during each year of the first three years of his/her working life, and then every 3 years until his/her retirement. More information on the PAT is available at http://www.nsd.on.ca/339/.
In 1996, National Service Dogs pioneered the program of breeding, training and placing Certified Service Dogs with children with autism. Over the last 16 years, NSD has graduated over 250 Certified Service Dog Teams, and has helped many service dog organizations around the world start their own autism programs. For more information on NSD’s autism program, please visit http://www.nsd.on.ca/programs/certified-service-dogs-for-autism/. Also, NSD was featured in 2012 on the television channel “Animal Planet” in a one-hour special entitled “Paws for Autism”.
