Flicka and the Ontario Veterinary College

Working in a busy urban centre, filled with tall skyscrapers, means Flicka’s available green spaces for body breaks is rather limited.  This is an unfortunate situation.

Fortunately, Flicka has found a very small public green patch some-what close to her downtown workplace.

This green patch is located in a City of Toronto operated park called “Cloud Gardens”.  Cloud Gardens is an interesting concept – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Gardens to learn more.

What does Cloud Garens have to do with the Ontario Veterinary College?  Well, Cloud Gardens is located on the original site of the Ontario Veterinary College!

Flicka’s Titled – We’re now calling her Madame Flicka, CNG

Included on the last page of Flicka’s scrapbook was a Registration/Evaluation Form from The Canadian Kennel Club for their Canine Good Neighbour progam.

Through the work of Flicka’s puppy raiser, Alison, Flicka has obtained the designation of Canine Good Neighbour (CNG) after she successfully completed all twelve required exercises to obtain the designation.  Flicka obtained her CNG status in the summer of 2012.

Flicka’s Scrapbook

Recently, I received a beautiful Flicka-focused scrapbook that had been created by Flicka’s puppy raiser, Alison.

This scrapbook is a wonderful surprise, and it gives me a glimpse into Flicka’s life before she was placed into advanced training at National Service Dogs.

Over the next few months, I’m going to try to share with this blog some of the highlights from Flicka’s scrapbook, including some of the special photos contained therein.

I’ve shared Flicka’s scrapbook with some of my work colleagues as well as friends and family.  The scrapbook has been a huge hit.  Thanks, Alison!

The first part of the scrapbook I’d like to share with you is the second last page.  While Flicka’s puppy raiser did not know where Flicka would ultimately be placed after she’d completed her advanced training, she still left a heartfelt message for Flicka’s handler, me!

Flicka’s puppy raiser’s message was:

We have had lots of fun preparing National Service Dogs’ Flicka over the past 18 months to meet you.  Our journey ends where yours begins – and we wouldn’t have it any other way!  Take good care of each other, always stick together and don’t ever be afraid to show the world how exceptional you both are.  With much love, The [redacted] Family

It would have been nice to have received a box of tissues along with Flicka’s scrapbook.  ;-)

Flicka’s Graduation

Last night was Flicka’s official graduation from National Service Dogs.  What a night!

NSD has been doing graduation night for years for its service dogs who are paired with children with Autism.  Last night, for the first time, their dogs who are trained to work with individuals who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were also honoured and participated in a graduation ceremony.  Two “PTSD” dogs graduated this year:  Elvis and Flicka!

Flicka meets The Tenors

This afternoon, Flicka met The Tenors, winners of the 2013 JUNO Canadian Music Award for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year.  Formerly known as The Canadian Tenors, The Tenors were on-hand at Scotia Plaza in Toronto to announce a new initiative that they’re involved in with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada and The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank).

Flicka goes to the Aquarium

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada officially opened on Wednesday, October 16th and Flicka was the first service dog to tour and experience Canada’s newest and largest aquarium.

Flicka was very excited about this.  I’m being serious.  In the nearly 4 months I’ve now been paired with her, I don’t think I’ve seen her so mesmerized.  Her eyes were clued to the aquarium tanks and the species inside!

Flicka goes to the Zoo

Recently, Flicka made a visit to the Toronto Zoo!

We had to arrange our visit in advance, provide all of Flicka’s service dog certification documentation and up-to-date vaccination records, and be escorted around the zoo property by a zoo volunteer.

We had two great volunteers, at various times, with us during our visit.  They knew so much about the animals!
