NSD Flicka Rides Toronto’s Subway For The First Time!

Earlier today, NSD Flicka was taken on Toronto’s subway for the first time by one or more of NSD’s trainers.  Joining her was also NSD Elvis.

NSD Flicka’s Training Continues

NSD Flicka’s training continues, in anticipation of her placement with me in late June.

The photo below was taken yesterday, and it shows Flicka watching her own video on Youtube.  Apparently, she’s improved her skills in this area of her training.

Once NSD Flicka is placed with me, she and I will be taken through the Assistance Dogs International Public Access Test.

This test must be completed by all of NSD’s service dogs-in-training before becoming Certified Service Dogs. The test is conducted upon placement and the dogs are re-certified every year for the first three years, and every other year following that.

The Public Access Test (PAT) assesses skills such as remaining calm when greeted by a stranger, remaining in a down stay while being approached by a shopping cart, ignoring dropped food and remaining in a heel position while walking. The ability to pass the PAT is not the sole determination of whether a dog will be put into active service. All of NSD’s dogs are evaluated for health, personality and temperament throughout their training process. The PAT ensures that everything the dog has learned can be put into practice.

Introducing Flicka

Today I learned that I’m being paired with NSD Flicka.  She is a 2 year old Golden Retriever, and she was born in March 2011.  Flicka is currently in the finishing stages of her training, and we will be paired in late June.

In the earlier stages of her training, National Service Dogs took some photos of Flicka.
